A former environmental lawyer and small business owner, Jacqui Scruby first ran as an independent in the 2023 NSW State election, bringing a former Liberal stronghold to a slim margin of just 600 votes. She was elected by her community to NSW Parliament in the 2024 Pittwater by-election, on a platform of better community representation and protection of the natural environment.
Her background has seen her working as an environmental lawyer at the Environmental Defenders’ office, and advising governments and major companies on climate risk and decarbonisation. Prior to her election, Jacqui worked as an advisor to Mackellar MP Dr Sophie Scamps to improve the Climate Change Act, and introduce the National Anti-Corruption commission.
In parliament, she has been instrumental in the declaration of the Great Koala National Park and is championing tougher action on the illegal tobacco and vape trade, and continues to advocate for the delivery of better infrastructure, services and representation for the community.
In the 2023 election campaign Jacqui was a leader in the fight against PEP-11. Jacqui drafted initial legislation to ban offshore oil and gas drilling in state waters. This is now law.
She is now fighting against new NSW planning controls which puts the environment at risk.
Climate 200 is proud to have supported Jacqui in 2023 and in 2024.
"I support Jacqui Scruby because she’s intelligent, determined, and deeply committed to our community. She listens, takes action, and delivers real results for Pittwater. Jacqui proves that you don’t have to be part of the major parties to make a real difference — you just have to care and work hard for the people you represent."
